What is search marketing?

Search marketing is a global term that refers to all of the different ways you can market a website on a search engine. The goal of search marketing is to increase the visibility of a website, and can be accomplished in a multitude of different ways. Below are the two major ways that most companies market their business.

Types of Listings

Organic Listings:

Organic listings are the core of all search engines, and they are not for sale.  These are the listings that are returned based on what is considered by the search engine to be the most relevant content for a specific search.  So for example, I want to find a company to print my business cards, I type business cards into the search bar, and Goggle returns millions of results.  The organic listings are a ranking system for all of those results from the most relevant to the least relevant.

Paid Search or PPC Listings:

Every major search engine has paid search ads. They have a few names like Pay-Per-Click (PPC) or Cost-Per-Click (CPC). Its a very simple concept. You agree to pay X amount of dollars per click to be listed, and if you decide to stop paying then you’re dropped from the paid listing results.
